Another sea day which means non-stop activity. Looking forward to the lectures, the art, the dancing, the conversations with new friends and relaxing just looking out to sea and pondering, journaling and just being amazed. (Oh – and eating.)
Apart from e-mails from close friends, most of us have basically unplugged, and it is truly liberating. No 24-hour news-cycle, Facebook, Reddit, random YouTubes, or social media to exacerbate the “us versus them” divide that plagues our modern life. Makes one feel more a part of the whole rather than just apart.
On the ship the passengers are of a certain class, maybe idle rich, or at least people with disposable income. An enjoyable pastime is people watching. We see all sorts irrespective of the financial status. There are snobs, friendlies, those in pain, those gritting it out, but all having fun or at least enjoyment. The sight of a flying fish brings out the youthful joy in all. And there is the crew, who (we believe) genuinely love what they are doing and therefore happy in their work. This attitude is infectious and pleasant.
After lunch the Astronomer set up a Solar Telescope. A very nice Coronado with all the bells and whistles. Bob and Paul took a peek along with many others. Even on a rolling ship, the Sun was moving around in the field of vision, but solar flares and prominences could be clearly seen. Thanks to the Captain for finding some (relatively) calm seas.
