Halifax, Nova Scotia
Sunrise on Saturday 9/2
Arrived in Halifax at 7:30 AM, ready to leave ship at 9. Our tour was to Peggy’s Cove, a very scenic lighthouse area a bit south of the city. The bus we rode was a double decker and we managed the front 4 seats on the second level.
The trip took about 45 minutes and we wound through city streets, took a freeway for a few miles to the “Lighthouse Trail” Nova Scotia’s scenic byway along the coast of Margaret’s inlet. Fishing boats, Lobster boats, grand houses and a few shacks dotted the area as we drove along. As we approached Peggy’s Cove the landscape got rockier and less forested until, at the cove, we were on ancient, glacier carved granite.
We had an hour to walk about the lighthouse and the fishing village area. The shops, restaurants and kitschy photo ops outnumbered the fishing houses 3:2. We shot the money shots, perused the shops, and walked on the granite to the lighthouse. Shirley found some new plants to add to her SEEK inventory.

Once back on the bus we reversed course so the left side of the bus could see what the right side saw going in. We were in the front, so just got some grand views of the ocean. The driver took us past a Cricket match, two of the cemeteries where Titanic victims were buried (including Jack Dawson [Leo DiCaprio from the movie] where many flowers kept the myth alive). We wound our way through downtown and to the ship.

After a good meal on board we were ready to take on the Halifax Waterfront walk. It was sunny and 74, but after the North country we felt very warm. The harbor walk is very nice. Many shops, restaurants, buskers, yachts tied up with beautiful people aboard sipping champagne, and lots of people. We walked to the iconic drunken lamppost sculpture. This is a very international city. We heard French, German, English, and what perhaps sounded like Tagalog, Hindi, Arabic (3rd most spoken language), and Chinese on our short walk of 2 KMs there and back. The walk extended another several KMs but we were hot and ready to rest a bit.
